A rose is a rose is a rose, says Gertrude Stein.

What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.
Romeo and Juliet, Act II, Scene 2.

Nevertheless, I suspect that Stein and Shakespeare might not have met winners of Name of the Year. The mission of Name of the Year is “to discover, verify, nominate, elect and disseminate great names”. As far as possible they include only real names.

The 2008 winners were:
Spaceman Africa
Destiny Frankenstein

The ballot for 2009 shows that there is still a big pool of names to be recognised as truly awesome, awe-inspiring or awful.

To think that as a kid I was impressed by the balls of my Technical Drawing teacher to sign everything as P. Ness.
